It’s finally happening! Fall has returned! Well, technically fall begins in two days, but who’s counting? I’m not sure if you can tell or not, but fall is pretty exciting to me. You’d be excited, too, if your summer temps hovered around 105 degrees! Who cares about pumpkin spice anything? Just give me a hoodie!
Another thing I love about fall is changing up my skin care routine. We all know how even a little change in the day-to-day makes everything feel new and easier. Well, now’s your chance to give yourself a break from the mundane and switch over to your fall skin care regimen!
How should a skin care regimen change with the seasons? It’s not about finding new formulas (though some may choose to switch) but more about what you spend your time focusing on. Here’s a look at how a summer skin care routine should change with the shift into fall.
Less lotion, more cream. For many people, cooler weather means heavier skin care moisturizers. This is especially true for those with dry skin who need extra help in fall and winter, thanks to harsher weather and central heating.
If you usually use a face lotion, which is generally lighter weight than a cream, it might be a good time to switch. For very dry skin or sensitive skin, I recommend our Intensive Moisturizing Cream. It is rich enough for even extremely dry skin, and can even be used on dry areas like the knees and elbows.
If you have normal or oily skin, our Daytime Undermakeup Moisture Cream is a great choice. It still provides great hydration with our patented MLE, but won’t feel quite as heavy as Intensive Moisturizing Cream. As the name suggests, it’s also ideal for use under makeup!
Less hot water, more hand moisturizer. In the cooler months, it may be tempting to warm up by using hot water when you bathe or wash your hands. However, this is very damaging to dry skin and can significantly increase discomfort and dryness. The hot water strips away protective oils (which dry skin lacks to begin with), leaving the hands feeling raw.
Instead, wash and bathe in tepid water, and always follow-up with a moisturizer. Since people tend to wash their hands throughout the day (at least, I hope they do!), I especially recommend keeping our Moisturizing Hand Treatment with you. It is the best hand cream you will ever use, and it instantly calms dry skin on contact.
Less makeup, more moisture application. In summer, even dry skin can typically get by with just a morning and evening application of face moisturizer. In colder months, though, it’s strongly recommended that you re-apply light layers of moisturizer throughout the day, or whenever skin feels parched.
The best way to accomplish this without completely ruining your makeup is to apply a light layer of makeup and use our Moisture Mist throughout the day. This way, you’re not applying face cream overtop your carefully applied makeup, and your makeup isn’t getting in the way of your moisturizer!
Another great idea is to use our BB Cream instead of traditional makeup. Atopalm BB Cream moisturizes and protects skin while evening the complexion, which makes it a great choice for those who need to moisturize throughout the day.
As you can see, updating your skin care routine to reflect the changing seasons doesn’t have to be an ordeal, and can lead to a fun new system. Just tweak a couple products, and you’ll have the perfect plan for achieving beautiful, happy skin.
