Guest Review: Real Barrier Kits

ATOPALM Real Barrier Korean beauty kits made a splash when they were first introduced last year. Containing one full size products and multiple mid-size products, these kits are a great way to acquaint yourself with many Real Barrier products at once without committing to full size prices!

You’ll notice that two of the kits — Extreme Cream Kit and Eye Contour Cream Kit — feature the same three products. The difference lies in which product is your full size, and which two are the mid-size versions.

Here’s a look at our kits provided by a guest blogger! After getting to experience each kit, she has first-hand knowledge, tips, and ideas for using these kits as part of your Korean skin care routine.

As someone who had only experienced the classic ATOPALM MLE products, I was so excited to try the Real Barrier line and feel the differences of the formulations.

While Real Barrier still uses the Multi-Lamellar Emulsion that made ATOPALM famous, Real Barrier takes moisturization a step further with hyaluronic acid, plus a three-calming complex comprised of allantoin, madecassoside, and panthenol helps combat sensitivity and irritation.

As mentioned above, two of the Real Barrier kits actually feature the same three products, but I found that they are quite different when it comes down to use. As you’ll soon see, one focuses on the overall face, while the other targets the eye and lip areas.

But why am I trying to explain when I could just tell you about my experience?

The first kit I opened was the Real Barrier Cica Cream Kit.  It combines four great formulas, and is intended for very sensitive, compromised, or acne-prone skin. The Cica Cream Kit contains:

  • Cicarelief Cream
  • Soothing Ampoule Mask
  • Intense Moisture Cream
  • Eye Contour Cream

The star ingredient in this kit is calamine, an ingredient that has been used for ages to treat everything from itching to burns and more. It’s exceedingly soothing and anti-inflammatory, which is what makes it so great for use on acne breakouts. Combine the healing and comforting benefits of calamine with the hydration and further calming actions from Real Barrier’s base ingredients, and you have a recipe for true skin change.

When using the Cicarelief Cream, I found that I was seeing healing in areas I didn’t even know were damaged. My skin is combination normal/dry (I know, join the club) but overall it stays relatively clear and calm. However, as I used Cicarelief Cream, I saw dryish patches become smooth and healthy, and I was able to nip a couple blemishes in the bud before they turned nastier.

For me, Cicarelief Cream makes the perfect blemish spot treatment, or maybe an overall face cream if I find myself facing major skin changes or sensitivity, like my once-yearly sunburn I never seem to be able to avoid.

The mid-size products in this kit are the mask, Intense Moisture Cream, and an eye cream. The Eye Contour Cream whet my appetite for the full-size Eye Contour Cream Kit which I had yet to enjoy (more on that below), and the Intense Moisture Cream is actually my perfect day moisturizer, but the product I got most excited about was the Soothing Ampoule Mask.

When I received this kit, the mask was actually exclusive to the Cicarelief Cream Kit, but it has just been released on the website in a 5-pack! This sheet mask is purifying (with charcoal!), moisturizing, and revitalizing. My skin absolutely glowed after using it, and I knew I had to get my hands on it again. Well thankfully it’s easy to do so now that it’s available on the site!

I recommended Cica Cream Kit to anyone with acne-prone skin, or skin that’s prone to redness, itching, or stinging. It’s a very handy kit to have on hand in case of acne breakouts, as both the Cicarelief Cream and Soothing Ampoule Mask provide anti-acne actions, though I will warn you that you’ll get hooked on the mask and end up ordering more! (So you should just do that in the first place.)

The next kit I tried was the Extreme Cream Kit which highlights three Real Barrier formulas:

  • Extreme Cream
  • Essence Mist
  • Eye Contour Cream

By now I already knew and loved the Eye Contour Cream, so I was happy to see that guy again, but the Extreme Cream and Essence Mist were both new to me.

Extreme Cream says it all in the name. This was the richest, most lush face moisturizer I have ever used. It felt like a spa treatment, but was shockingly not greasy at all after application.

Now, I have to stop here and just shout this from the rooftops — MLE WORKS WONDERS. Like I said before, I have pretty low maintenance skin, but I had no idea how compromised my skin actually was until I saw the difference MLE made.

With Extreme Cream, my skin became softer, smoother, and more radiant. If you can believe it, my skin actually looks plumper. I think the best way to explain it is that my whole face looks and feels more youthful, in that it has a healthy glow and texture.

For my normal to dry skin, Extreme Cream is the perfect night cream, which is what I used it for. Since I had the opportunity to also try Intense Moisture Cream in the Cica Cream Kit, I found that my perfect regimen used Intense Moisture during the day, and Extreme Cream at night. However, either formula can be used for either day or night depending on your skin.

Lastly, I honestly didn’t expect to use Moisture Mist all that much since I don’t usually feel parched during the day, but that little spray became my best friend! I kept it in my purse and got into the habit of spritzing my skin around lunch time, and once I did a little spray break when I was feeling particularly stressed. My skin felt instantly refreshed, which somehow made me feel refreshed. Placebo? Maybe, but who cares?

Last but certainly not least, there was the Eye Contour Cream Kit, which as mentioned before contains the same three products as above, but with a full size Eye Contour Cream. In short, the lineup is:

  • Eye Contour Cream
  • Extreme Cream
  • Essence Mist

The unique thing about Eye Contour Cream is that it can also be used around the lips. ATOPALM calls these areas triangle zones, and says they are more prone to damage and visible signs of damage, which I personally have found to be true. The eye area in particular is usually one of the first places to show signs of aging which, frankly, I’m not ready for.

Upon application, I absolutely saw a difference in my eye area. It was like the cream brightened my eyes and made me look well-rested. I am a mom to three. I am not well-rested. But this cream made me look like it!

I also love how well it moisturized around my lips. I have never smoked so I don’t have a lot of lines or discoloration in that area, but I have noticed that it gets extra dry, especially in winter. Applying Eye Contour Cream felt like I was applying a balm that was created especially for that area, and I didn’t look like I had over-applied Chapstick around my lips.

Getting extras of Extreme Cream and Essence Mist was a huge bonus (especially so I don’t run out of Essence Mist too quickly!) and I was happy to have a full size of the Eye Contour Cream which now has a permanent place in my daily Korean beauty regimen.

I am so pleased that I was able to experience the Real Barrier line in this way and learn more about how these products could work for me! Coming from an understanding that ATOPALM specializes in dry and sensitive skin, I didn’t realize that their formulas would work so well for my normal to dry combo skin, but you can now call me a believer.
