October is Eczema Awareness Month. If you or a loved one suffer from eczema, you know how this common skin condition can affect daily comfort, self-esteem, and even lifestyle choices.
Eczema sufferers experience flare-ups no matter what time of year it is, but fall and winter throw some extra eczema triggers into the mix. If you’re experiencing increased eczema during colder months, it’s time to alter your eczema skin care (and maybe even a few other areas of life) in order to keep skin healthy and comfortable during fall and winter.
Indoor heating and bathing in hot water are two favorite ways to warm up as the weather cools down, but they can also contribute to eczema flare-ups. Whether you’re using a space heater under your desk or taking extra hot showers in the evening, you’re likely to see an increase in dryness, redness, itching, and flaking in your eczema-prone areas.
Instead of relying on quick heat fixes, try keeping warm with extra layers (of soft, breathable fabrics) and choose tepid—not hot—water to bathe. You may not get that immediate sense of heat, but your body will acclimate and soon you’ll be living a cozier and more comfortable life.
When the weather cools off, it’s easy to forget to drink enough water during the day. But your hydration needs remain the same as they are during warmer months, and your eczema-prone skin relies on internal hydration to keep itself from worsening!
You can track your water intake with phone or calendar apps, or you can do something simple like buying a large water bottle and filling it a certain number of times per day. Also remember that other beverages like tea or juice may be somewhat hydrating, nothing beats pure water for keeping your skin healthy from the inside out.
Stay Stocked up on ATOPALM
Eczema actually acted as the catalyst of ATOPALM. Our founder, Dr. Park, formulated Intensive Moisturizing Cream to treat his infant son’s persistent eczema.
After seeing incredible results, ATOPALM was born, and it was soon realized that every skin type could benefit from the supportive and protective actions of MLE. As MLE sinks into the skin, it mimics the skin’s natural lipid layer, causing skin to feel naturally moisturized rather than slathered in lotion.
While ATOPALM is now targeted toward all skin types in need of lipid layer repair, it remains one of the best skin care brands for eczema. Two of our favorite eczema skin care products are our flagship product, Intensive Moisturizing Cream, as well as Moisturizing Body Lotion.
Intensive Moisturizing Cream prevents the over-evaporation of moisture while other soothing ingredients actually provide moisture, leading to the comprehensive care of the skin. It calms and comforts skin immediately upon application, and provides long-lasting moisture that promises visible improvement of conditions like eczema.
Moisturizing Body Lotion is our answer to skin care from the shoulders down. Its lightweight texture never feels greasy or heavy, but the MLE-rich formula delivers maximum moisture to comfort and soothe skin.
Our body lotion also uses allantoin to prevent irritation and antioxidant-rich vitamin E to neutralize and prevent free radical damage. For those with eczema, it is a must-have.
