Acne Care for Dry Skin

Source: flickr.com user SnapShotChaos

If you have dry, acne-prone skin, you know how hard it is to find a cream to address all your concerns at once. Most people associate acne blemishes with oily skin, but the truth is that many dry conditions (such as rosacea) can cause acne breakouts, leaving skin both dry and broken out.

Why does dry skin break out?
The answer to this varies. In short, you can get an acne blemish any time a hair follicle becomes clogged. In oily skin, the clog is usually caused by excess oil. But the follicles can also be clogged by cosmetic products, dirt, bacteria, and dead skin cells — the last being the major cause of acne in dry skin.

If you have dry skin, it’s often flaky and rough. There are dead skin cells galore that refuse to slough off, so instead they clog follicles, leading to breakouts. Dry skin may also try to overcompensate for its dryness by actually overproducing oil, further leading to clogs when those dead skin cells keep oil trapped.

Lastly, conditions associated with dryness, such as rosacea, come with their own forms of pimples which operate similarly to acne blemishes, though they’re not identical. Treatment for rosacea blemishes may differ from traditional acne treatments; however, when it comes to ATOPALM’s secret weapon against blemishes, you only need one product whether you’re dealing with acne or rosacea.

How do I treat pimples in dry skin?
Many popular acne treatments can be harsh and over-drying to the skin, simply because they’re meant for oily, traditionally acne-prone skin. Top acne products often contain benzoyl peroxide, an ingredient which can irritate any skin type, but positively wreak havoc on dry, sensitive skin.

Rather than exposing dry skin to overly stripping acne products, it’s important to find a formulation which will treat the blemishes without upsetting surrounding skin. In this way, you can reduce the appearance of pimples and help them heal without undoing the work of your other skin care products.

What’s the best spot treatment for dry acne-prone skin?
Call us biased if you want, but the truth is still the truth: ATOPALM Cicarelief Cream is our #1 best-selling product for acne. Not only that, but it’s an excellent blemish treatment whether your skin is dry or not! It can be used on acne blemishes as well as rosacea blemishes, and anything in between.

The unique benefits of Cicarelief Cream come from the combination of ATOPALM MLE and calamine. These two ingredients target blemishes from a healing standpoint, as well as a soothing standpoint. MLE repairs and supports skin health while calamine reduces inflammation, redness, and irritation. The result is skin that both looks and feels better while it’s actually being healed — not just covered or dried up.

Try Cicarelief Cream when you order the Real Barrier Cica Cream Kit. You’ll find a full size bottle of Cicarelief Cream, as well as mid-size versions of Extreme Cream Mask and Eye Contour Cream, all at a special discounted price.

What’s Your Skin Type

We spend a lot of time talking about dry and sensitive skin types on the Atopalm blog, since most of our customers fall into these categories. But did you know that Atopalm is beneficial for every skin type?

Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, acne-prone, or any combination thereof, Atopalm can benefit your skin. How can one line be equally great for all skin types? All skin types need healthy moisture levels to function properly!

Since Atopalm’s main objective is to keep skin healthfully moisturized and support the skin’s lipid levels, all skin needs Atopalm. It’s that simple. While people have different preferences for skin care textures and types, the fact remains that Atopalm is beneficial for all.

You may wish to choose some Atopalm products over others depending on your skin type. In order to select the best products for you, you must first know what your skin type is. For some people, it’s obvious. You may have itchy, flaky, classically dry skin, or you may blot oil from your face all day.

For others, it’s not so simple. Combination skin can be tricky to categorize, as can skin that itches like dry skin but appears oily. Here’s a helpful guide to help you figure out what your skin type is!

Step one: take a shower and thoroughly wash face without a cleanser. Did you know that your non-Atopalm face cleanser may be over-stripping the skin of its oils, leading you to believe you have dry skin even if you don’t? In order to determine skin type, remove all makeup and simply wash your face with pure water.

Step two: wait two hours. Leave your face alone (no skin care products, and no touching!) and pass the time in whatever way you choose.

Step three: blot your entire face with a tissue, preferably one that doesn’t have added lotion. Gently blot, paying special attention to the T-zone, which ranges from your full forehead, down your nose, and to your chin.

Step four: review your findings by looking at your face as well as your blotting tissue. Your skin will fall into one of the following four categories:

  • Normal skin will not flake, itch, or feel tight. It appears supple and smooth, and is comfortable even without moisturizer. Normal skin is the unicorn of skin types!
  • Oily skin will leave visible oil on your tissue. Your skin may also appear shiny and feel slick to the touch. Those with oily skin often have large pores, and feel weighed down by heavy lotions or creams. Oily skin is also more likely to have acne breakouts, though any skin type is susceptible to blemishes.
  • Dry skin is the second most common skin type, largely due to the fact that most people are chronically dehydrated. Environmental damage also generally results in dry skin, including sun damage, harsh skin care products, and even central heating and air. Dry skin feels taut, especially after cleansing, and regularly shows flakes of dead skin. Pores are generally smaller, and large acne breakouts are less common but not unheard of.
  • Combination skin is the most common skin type, which shows how unhealthy most skin is. Combination skin is essentially the skin not knowing what to do with itself, as it shows traits of normal, oily, and dry skin. It is unbalanced, specifically showing dryness on the cheeks, and excess oil in the T-zone.

Now that you’ve determined your skin type, you can proceed knowing what your skin needs to look and feel its healthiest. With Atopalm, you can give your skin an advantage by first treating its hydration and barrier needs. After your skin’s most basic needs are met, many issues will resolve themselves and you may even find yourself getting nearer to the normal skin category we’d all love to be in!

Eat Right for Your Skin Type: Sensitive Skin

When it comes to sensitive skin, treating your symptoms holistically is one of the most effective ways to keep outbreaks at bay. And when we say holistically, we don’t mean using wooden necklaces to magically heal symptoms! We mean holistic in the literal sense — by looking at the system as a whole, rather than treating bits and pieces of the body.

Sensitive skin and diet have been proven to have a strong connection. Just ask someone with a food allergy who deals with eczema, or a person who avoids spicy foods as to not set off their rosacea. If you have sensitive skin, eating right for your skin type is just as important as choosing the right skin care products.

If you have sensitive skin, it is more reliable to avoid certain foods rather than eat certain foods. You may find that some foods help your sensitive skin, but as you’re getting started, try cutting out the following foods to see if your skin condition improves.

Dairy
Dairy is a common trigger food, especially for eczema. You don’t have to be lactose intolerant to avoid dairy — dairy allergies are entirely different, but just as legitimate. Whey and casein (milk proteins) are usually the allergy culprits, so also avoid food products made with those ingredients. Great dairy alternatives include nut milks, rice milk, coconut milk, and hemp milk.

Wine
There’s probably a lot of groaning for this one, but it’s important. The tannins found in wine (especially red wine) can be a skin irritant, especially for those with rosacea. Wine tannins can cause skin flushing and hives, and is also a dehydrator. White wine might be ok in small amounts, but be sure to be aware of how your skin is looking and feeling after you indulge.

Additives
Artificial colors, preservatives, artificial flavors, MSG…Additives are unhealthy for the system, so they’re unhealthy for your skin. Canned, frozen, and boxed foods generally contain additives, but you also have to watch out for foods masquerading as healthy but hiding a list of additives. These foods can include yogurt, diet snacks, and so much more.

Gluten
True, being gluten-free has become very popular in the last few years, but that doesn’t mean that genuine gluten allergies don’t exist. Celiac disease causes people to be unable to eat gluten without suffering from awful symptoms, including itchy, blistering rashes called dermatitis herpetiformis. Even those without celiac disease can have a gluten intolerance, which can cause skin issues like acne and eczema.

Eggs
Egg whites (and sometimes the yolk) can cause a skin rash by triggering your body’s histamine response. Sometimes this reaction happens within minutes of eating an egg, while other times you may not notice a rash until hours later. In extreme reactions, the rash will turn into hives and you’ll have a full-blown allergic reaction on your hands. If you suspect eggs to be causing your skin issues, remove them from your diet for two weeks and see if your skin condition improves.

Avoiding common foods is certainly inconvenient, but seeing your skin regain health, beauty, and comfort will be the incentive you need to stick with it.

Atopalm 130+: Best Sensitive Skin Care

Many people suffer from dry or sensitive skin, but if you’re one of the few who suffer from extremely dry skin or you’re dealing with post-treatment sensitivity, Atopalm has just what you need.

Atopalm 130+ is a small group of sensitive skin care designed just for those who need an extreme dose of soothing, supportive skin care. Atopalm 130+ was created with skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis in mind. If nothing else has worked for your sensitive skin, Atopalm 130+ is just what you need.

What sets Atopalm 130+ apart? It features the same proven MLE formulations as our flagship line; however, it is formulated with a higher concentration of these restorative ingredients, meaning your skin is wrapped in the highest level of soothing ingredients that we offer.

MLE and other ingredients work to restore the skin’s lipid layer while soothing feelings of discomfort. Atopalm 130+ is one of the few dry skin care lines that actually works to address why your skin is so sensitive, rather than just masking the issues. The result is calmer, more comfortable skin.

Atopalm 130+ is perfect for extreme dryness and sensitivity, as well as skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It’s also excellent for use after in-office procedures that leave the skin vulnerable, such as chemical peels.

In addition to what it does contain, Atopalm 130+ promises safe, gentle use based on what it does not contain. All the 130+ products are free of nuts oils, solvents, fragrances, parabens, and anything else known to irritate sensitive skin.

We are confident that Atopalm 130+ is beneficial for any sensitive, dry skin type, and can be the answer your skin has been looking for. If you’ve yet to find a skin care line that’s gentle enough for your sensitive skin, we encourage you to try Atopalm 130+ today!

Summer Skin Care: BB Cream

Sure, we may be a little biased, but we LOVE our Atopalm BB Cream! It’s great year-round, but here’s what makes it a summer skin care essential for all skin types, including those with sensitive skin, dry skin, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.

  1. It moisturizes skin with our proprietary MLE, an ingredient which perfectly mimics the skin’s natural lipid layer. MLE both replenishes and supports the lipid layer to decrease symptoms of dryness, sensitivity, and discomfort.
  2. It protects with skin care antioxidants and a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Vitamin E and arbutin provide the antioxidant effects while also conditioning and nourishing the skin. The SPF 20 sunscreen shields against both UVA (aging) and UVB (burning) rays to achieve maximum protection.
  3. It perfects skin with natural-looking mineral pigment. These minerals blend effortlessly with your skin’s natural color to camouflage the appearance of uneven skin tone, blemishes, and even sun damage. The best part is that these mineral pigments won’t interfere with the health and workings of your skin! Many experts recommend mineral makeup for those with rosacea and eczema. Oftentimes, women with those skin conditions are unable to use makeup without irritation. Mineral makeup changes that by offering a gentle alternative to traditional makeup formulations. Our BB Cream is available in both Light and Medium shades, and can be blended with any other pure makeup foundation to achieve your ideal hue.

We recommend that you use our beauty balm daily to keep skin moisturized, protected, and perfected. Use it layered with our other moisturizing products for maximum results, or use it alone when you’re short on time or on-the-go! It’s the perfect product to throw in your carry-on luggage, camping pack, or weekend suitcase.

You don’t have to take our word for how great this products is — check out a recent BB Cream Review over at Eyeliner on a Cat!

Stay Cool this Summer with Enduracool and Atopalm

Everyone likes to stay cool during summer temperature highs, but for those with sensitive skin conditions like rosacea and eczema, staying cool is essential to skin health, comfort, and beauty. This summer, staying cool is easier than ever, thanks to a revolutionary product known as the Enduracool Cooling Towel.

The Enduracool Cooling Towel is made from a unique proprietary performance fabric that is able to instantly become cool and remain so for hours, all without the use of chemicals! Using patented Coolcore™ technology, the Cooling Towel cools to 30 degrees below average body temperature while remaining soft and pliable.

How does it work? Coolcore™ technology, the industry’s first chemical-free cooling material for the textile market, is the secret to this incredible product. When the Cooling Towel is soaked, wrung out and “snapped” in the air, a three-step cooling process begins. (Watch how to activate the Cooling Towel now!)

First, air flow initializes cooling to jump-start the towel’s capabilities. Next, the fabric’s proprietary weave regulates evaporation, which provides sustained cooling. Finally, the fabric wicks away sweat from the skin to instantly cool and maintain the towel’s cooling process.

Because the product works without any chemicals at all, the cooling function of the towel never washes out, even when cleaned in the washing machine! In addition, the soft microfiber texture of the towel means that it will never feel stiff or rough, even when used during hardcore workouts.

The Enduracool Cooling Towel is an excellent choice for athletes, those who live in warmer climates, as well as those who regularly experience hot flashes or even fevers. For our fantastic Atopalm customers, the Cooling Towel can help to diminish and comfort symptoms of sensitive skin, especially those who experience flushing and warmth thanks to rosacea, psoriasis, eczema, and other sensitive skin issues.

Try Enduracool for FREE!
For a limited time only, all orders of $75 or more will automatically receive a FREE Enduracool Cooling Towel ($14.99 retail value), as well as a FREE package of Atopalm Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes ($12.99 value), all with FREE shipping! New Year, New You: Skin Cleansing

Source: flickr.com user twicepix
Source: flickr.com user twicepix

We are so excited to welcome 2014 and begin our New Year, New You series! At Atopalm, we’re looking at 2014 as a fresh start to learn how to treat ourselves better, starting with our skin. Plus, we’re offering a great sale for everyone taking advantage of our New Year, New You skin care tips — simply enter code NEWYOU at checkout to receive $10 off any $60+ order, plus free shipping in the US!

In honor the new year, we’re starting with the basics: skin cleansing. Did you know that proper skin cleansing can make or break your entire skin care routine? It’s especially important for dry skin sufferers to practice proper cleansing techniques with well-formulated products.

Atopalm offers two great cleansing solutions that are both suitable for all skin types, but particularly beneficial for dry skin, sensitive skin, and rosacea skin. Moisturizing Facial Cleansing Foam offers traditional cleansing with a velvety foam texture and moisturizing formula containing skin care antioxidants.

Our Moisturizing Cleansing Wipes contain a similar, though non-foaming, formula held in pre-saturated cloths, which makes them perfect for quick, water-free cleansing at home or on-the-go. The clothes are very gentle and are especially great for removing makeup, so they’re a good option for those who wear makeup but hate a full evening cleansing routine!

When cleansing your skin, be sure to wash with tepid (not hot) water to avoid stripping away the skin’s natural oils. If you suffer from extremely dry skin, consider cleansing with a formula only at night to remove impurities and makeup, and simply using pure water to refresh skin in the morning. This routine will conserve the maximum amount of the skin’s natural oils, leading to improved comfort and radiance.

Cleansing your skin purifies it and creates a fresh palette to optimize subsequent skin care products. Putting other skin care products on dirty or compromised skin will make it harder for them to absorbs, which means your skin won’t be getting the full benefits of those formulas. Be sure to keep your skin purified and fresh, and you’ll see better results than ever before!

Be sure to tune in next week for another New Year, New You post, and don’t forget to enter code NEWYOU at checkout to receive $10 off any $60+ order, plus free shipping within the US!

Atopalm 130+ vs. Atopalm Classic

Source: flickr.com user Katharine Shields
Source: flickr.com user Katharine Shields

When you visit Atopalm.com, you’ll see a slew of skin care products belonging our classic Atopalm line. From our best-selling Intensive Moisturizing Cream, to specialty products like the Daytime Undermakeup Moisture Cream, Atopalm’s flagship formulas dominate the site. However, you may also notice the Atopalm 130+ line and wonder how it differs from our classic products.

When it comes to Atopalm 130+, what you need to remember is that it’s simultaneously more active and more soothing than our classic line. Many people with extremely sensitive skin shy away from products that promote their activeness, but in this case, more active equals more soothing.

Atopalm 130+ features the same healing, moisturizing, and calming ingredients found in the classic Atopalm line. It contains our multi-lamellar emulsion (MLE) and other key active ingredients at 30% higher levels than our other products. This means that severely dry skin, sensitive skin, and extreme skin conditions will get a higher dose of MLE and other ingredients to thoroughly repair and reinforce the skin’s lipid layer while banishing redness, dryness, stinging, and discomfort.

In addition to naturally sensitive or dry skin types, Atopalm 130+ is also ideal for wounded and compromised skin. Whether it’s due to in-office procedures, external aggressors, or physical damage to the skin, any cause of sensitivity can be addressed with Atopalm 130+. It can also be used by normally dry skin types during winter or times of increased discomfort, or as a night treatment in conjunction with our classic products.

If you’re not sure whether to use our classic products or the Atopalm 130+ line, you can talk to your doctor or dermatologist about the sensitivity level of your skin. As a general rule, those with normally dry skin or sensitive skin will be thoroughly cared for by our classic products. Those with rosacea, psoriasis or eczema may find comfort in either the classic or 130+ products. Those with excessively dry, sensitive, or afflicted skin should first try the 130+ line and adjust based on personal preference or changes in skin condition.

Have you tried our Atopalm 130+ sensitive skin care products? Did you find them to be effective? Tell us about your experience in the comments!
