What’s Your Skin Type

We spend a lot of time talking about dry and sensitive skin types on the Atopalm blog, since most of our customers fall into these categories. But did you know that Atopalm is beneficial for every skin type?

Whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, acne-prone, or any combination thereof, Atopalm can benefit your skin. How can one line be equally great for all skin types? All skin types need healthy moisture levels to function properly!

Since Atopalm’s main objective is to keep skin healthfully moisturized and support the skin’s lipid levels, all skin needs Atopalm. It’s that simple. While people have different preferences for skin care textures and types, the fact remains that Atopalm is beneficial for all.

You may wish to choose some Atopalm products over others depending on your skin type. In order to select the best products for you, you must first know what your skin type is. For some people, it’s obvious. You may have itchy, flaky, classically dry skin, or you may blot oil from your face all day.

For others, it’s not so simple. Combination skin can be tricky to categorize, as can skin that itches like dry skin but appears oily. Here’s a helpful guide to help you figure out what your skin type is!

Step one: take a shower and thoroughly wash face without a cleanser. Did you know that your non-Atopalm face cleanser may be over-stripping the skin of its oils, leading you to believe you have dry skin even if you don’t? In order to determine skin type, remove all makeup and simply wash your face with pure water.

Step two: wait two hours. Leave your face alone (no skin care products, and no touching!) and pass the time in whatever way you choose.

Step three: blot your entire face with a tissue, preferably one that doesn’t have added lotion. Gently blot, paying special attention to the T-zone, which ranges from your full forehead, down your nose, and to your chin.

Step four: review your findings by looking at your face as well as your blotting tissue. Your skin will fall into one of the following four categories:

  • Normal skin will not flake, itch, or feel tight. It appears supple and smooth, and is comfortable even without moisturizer. Normal skin is the unicorn of skin types!
  • Oily skin will leave visible oil on your tissue. Your skin may also appear shiny and feel slick to the touch. Those with oily skin often have large pores, and feel weighed down by heavy lotions or creams. Oily skin is also more likely to have acne breakouts, though any skin type is susceptible to blemishes.
  • Dry skin is the second most common skin type, largely due to the fact that most people are chronically dehydrated. Environmental damage also generally results in dry skin, including sun damage, harsh skin care products, and even central heating and air. Dry skin feels taut, especially after cleansing, and regularly shows flakes of dead skin. Pores are generally smaller, and large acne breakouts are less common but not unheard of.
  • Combination skin is the most common skin type, which shows how unhealthy most skin is. Combination skin is essentially the skin not knowing what to do with itself, as it shows traits of normal, oily, and dry skin. It is unbalanced, specifically showing dryness on the cheeks, and excess oil in the T-zone.

Now that you’ve determined your skin type, you can proceed knowing what your skin needs to look and feel its healthiest. With Atopalm, you can give your skin an advantage by first treating its hydration and barrier needs. After your skin’s most basic needs are met, many issues will resolve themselves and you may even find yourself getting nearer to the normal skin category we’d all love to be in!

Atopalm 130+: Best Sensitive Skin Care

Many people suffer from dry or sensitive skin, but if you’re one of the few who suffer from extremely dry skin or you’re dealing with post-treatment sensitivity, Atopalm has just what you need.

Atopalm 130+ is a small group of sensitive skin care designed just for those who need an extreme dose of soothing, supportive skin care. Atopalm 130+ was created with skin conditions like rosacea, eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis in mind. If nothing else has worked for your sensitive skin, Atopalm 130+ is just what you need.

What sets Atopalm 130+ apart? It features the same proven MLE formulations as our flagship line; however, it is formulated with a higher concentration of these restorative ingredients, meaning your skin is wrapped in the highest level of soothing ingredients that we offer.

MLE and other ingredients work to restore the skin’s lipid layer while soothing feelings of discomfort. Atopalm 130+ is one of the few dry skin care lines that actually works to address why your skin is so sensitive, rather than just masking the issues. The result is calmer, more comfortable skin.

Atopalm 130+ is perfect for extreme dryness and sensitivity, as well as skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema. It’s also excellent for use after in-office procedures that leave the skin vulnerable, such as chemical peels.

In addition to what it does contain, Atopalm 130+ promises safe, gentle use based on what it does not contain. All the 130+ products are free of nuts oils, solvents, fragrances, parabens, and anything else known to irritate sensitive skin.

We are confident that Atopalm 130+ is beneficial for any sensitive, dry skin type, and can be the answer your skin has been looking for. If you’ve yet to find a skin care line that’s gentle enough for your sensitive skin, we encourage you to try Atopalm 130+ today!

3 Reasons to Treat Psoriasis with Psoriapalm

Itchiness. Redness. Irritation. Flaking. Scaling. If you have psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis, you know these symptoms all too well.

While an end-all cure for psoriasis is still being researched, the best way to treat symptoms of psoriasis is with Psoriapalm Lotion, a proven, non-greasy psoriasis lotion that promises to reduce symptoms of this difficult skin condition.

If you’re ready to take the next step in psoriasis treatment, here’s a list of three reasons to treat psoriasis with Psoriapalm.

1) It’s clinically proven. In an independent clinical study, Psoriapalm Lotion was shown to provide a 47% reduction of redness, a 72% reduction of scaling, and a 53% reduction of plaque elevation. This all occurred over the course of only 12 weeks!

Psoriapalm Lotion is also able to soothe itching and physical irritation immediately upon application, allowing you to start experiencing more comfortable skin after just one use.

2) It’s formulated with advanced ingredients. Psoriapalm Lotion is formulated with a proprietary pseudo-ceramide, fatty acids, cholesterol, and MLE technology. These ingredients work together to comprise multi-lamellar structures that are nearly identical to the structure of natural human skin lipids.

What this means is that Psoriapalm Lotion allows your skin to act like healthy skin. It supports the skin’s barrier function while offering therapeutic benefits to suffering skin, allowing the skin to look and feel like its healthy self again.

3) It’s affordable. If you’ve suffered from psoriasis or seborrheic dermatitis for long, you know that it’s easy to waste time and money on products that just don’t work. Psoriapalm Lotion offers you the highest-quality effective psoriasis skin care ingredients out there for the amazingly low price of $13.99 a bottle. This is an unheard of deal that makes it easy to give Psoriapalm Lotion a try!

Have you tried Psoriapalm yet? Leave us a comment and tell us how it worked for you!

Our advice is not intended to replace that of a doctor’s. Please speak with your doctor or dermatologist before choosing a psoriasis treatment.

Three Atopalm Products with Surprising Uses

There’s nothing like finding new ways to use the skin care products you love. Not only does it make your routine easier, but you’ll also save money by getting creative with the products you already have! To give you some inspiration, here are three Atopalm products with surprising uses.

1) Moisturizing Foot and Heel Balm for dry knees and elbows
Many dry skin sufferers find that their knees and elbows suffer most of all! Rough, cracked skin is bad enough, but when you experience it in these oft-used areas, you’re in for a miserable time.

The good news is that our Moisturizing Foot and Heel Balm is perfect for these areas. Designed to deeply moisturize and replenish dry, cracked feet, our foot cream is just as wonderful for use on the knees and elbows. Just slather some on after your shower or before bed, and these problem areas will be looking and feeling better in no time.

2) Moisturizing Body Lotion for babies and children with dry skin
Most Atopalm customers know that our dry skin care products are some of the most soothing and gentle skin care formulas on the market. But, did you know that we believe some of our body skin care products are even safe enough for little ones?

If your baby or child suffers from dry skin, sensitive skin, or even eczema, turn to our Moisturizing Body Lotion. This best body lotion uses MLE and other soothing ingredients to restore hydration while repairing the skin’s moisture barrier, which leads to healthier and more comfortable skin.

Before you use our Moisturizing Body Lotion on your little one, check with their doctor to make sure that the ingredients are a good fit for your child. We strongly believe that our products are some of the gentlest and most effective sensitive skin care products out there, but check with your doctor before using!

3) Atopalm BB Cream as a makeup primer
While our Daytime Undermakeup Moisture Cream is a favorite for use as a makeup primer, sometimes individuals prefer a full coverage look that the Undermakeup Cream may not promote. If you’re looking for a full coverage primer, look no further than our BB Cream!

Atopalm BB Cream is a three-in-one product that moisturizes the skin, protects with SPF and skin care antioxidants, and provides a light layer of color to help disguise imperfections. You can use it alone, but when used under a makeup foundation, it will help provide full coverage while benefitting the skin.

BonusPsoriapalm for dandruff
Did you know that dandruff is a form of seborrheic dermatitis? That’s why our sister brand, Psoriapalm, is the perfect choice for dandruff treatment. Psoriapalm Lotion is a non-greasy psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis treatment. It’s clinically proven to reduce symptoms of these skin conditions.

When used on the scalp, Psoriapalm will help to reduce flaking, scaling, irritation and redness. While it promises a grease-free texture on the skin, we can’t promise that it won’t show up in your hair, which is why we recommend nighttime Psoriapalm use with a morning washing using a dandruff-friendly shampoo.

Featured Question: How to Treat Scalp Psoriasis

You ask, we answer! Today’s Featured Question was sent to us on Facebook; if you have a question regarding skin care, beauty, dry skin, or skin care conditions, please leave us a comment here or Like us and ask on our Facebook page!

Corrie C. says, “I have plaque psoriasis on my scalp. It has only ever gone away when I’ve been put on steroids for other things. What are the best products to use? How often should I wash my hair? You’d think I’d know what to do after 30+ years, but because it’s under my hair I just pretend it doesn’t exist…”

Scalp psoriasis affects roughly half of those who suffer from psoriasis in general. Like Corrie mentions, it’s easy to ignore scalp psoriasis since it’s relatively hidden by the hair, but the discomfort remains and visible signs can appear at the drop of a hat. (Pun slightly intended!)

Like most forms of psoriasis, scalp psoriasis appears as raised, red, and scaly patches of skin. Sometimes it only affects one or two areas; other times, it’s the entire scalp, and may even include the forehead, neck, and ears. Other symptoms of scalp psoriasis include dandruff-like flakes, dry scalp, burning sensation, scalp soreness, and hair loss.

When scalp psoriasis is mild, you may not even know you have it. Symptoms are barely noticeable, and the hair covers visible signs of psoriasis. However, for moderate and severe cases, it can be a nightmare. Thick, crusted lesions cause itchiness that begs to be scratched, which can in turn lead to pain, discomfort, and even infection or hair loss.

Treating scalp psoriasis can be trickier than treating psoriasis on other areas of the body thanks to your hair. However, most psoriasis treatments can be used on the scalp, as long as they’re applied at the correct time of day.

Most doctors recommend starting with an over-the-counter product containing FDA-approved medications like salicylic acid or coal tar. The next step would be prescription medications featuring one or both of those ingredients, as well as any number of the following medications:

  • Anathralin
  • Antimicrobials
  • Calcipotriene
  • Steroids
  • Tazarotene

While these prescription medications may help, some of them can be too harsh for sensitive skin and may cause issues in the long-term. That’s why we recommend choosing the best OTC psoriasis treatment you can find — Psoriapalm Lotion.

Psoriapalm Lotion features 2% salicylic acid for the treatment of psoriasis. It can be used to treat psoriasis on the body and face, but also makes an excellent scalp psoriasis treatment. Applied directly to the scalp before you go to sleep, Psoriapalm Lotion works to soften and heal psoriasis-afflicted skin.

In addition to salicylic acid, it also contains the incredible super-ingredient known as MLE. MLE, or multi-lamellar emulsion, is able to flawlessly mimic the skin’s natural lipid layer, which allows it to restore the skin’s healthy barrier function. For psoriasis-sufferers, this means less irritation and scaling. MLE, alongside salicylic acid, is what makes Psoriapalm Lotion so effective for use on all psoriasis, including scalp psoriasis.

To treat scalp psoriasis with non-greasy Psoriapalm Lotion, simply apply it directly to the scalp before you go to bed. Make sure to have a dedicated pillowcase for use after treatment in case some of the product transfers. In clinical studies, Psoriapalm Lotion caused a 72% reduction in visible scaling, a 53% reduction in plaque elevation, and a 47% reduction in skin redness. It also improves overall irritation and beauty, allowing the return of your comfort and confidence.

Ingredient Spotlight: Glycerin

One of the most common skin care ingredients today is glycerin. Sometimes listed as glycerolglycerin is a simple sugar alcohol compound that’s used both for cosmetic purposes and to treat a range of skin care conditions.

Glycerin is a humectant. This means it attracts water, which makes it a great ingredient for use in dry skin care products. When a skin care formula containing glycerin is applied, it actually draws moisture in from external sources (like the air), while also sealing moisture into the skin.

In addition to attracting and sealing in water, glycerin also helps to maintain the skin’s natural water balance. This is obviously extremely important for dry and sensitive skin, but it can also help to treat and prevent visible signs of aging by “plumping” the skin and smoothing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

On a more medical level, glycerin is a great psoriasis treatment. One article published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology stated that glycerin is actually able to signal the skin cells to mature and exfoliate in a normal fashion. For psoriasis sufferers, this means that skin that would normally become thick and scaly can instead take on a normal, healthy, and more comfortable tone and texture. Similarly, glycerin can also work to speed wound healing, and may even help prevent or reduce the appearance of scarring.

On a very surface level, skin care glycerin just makes the skin look healthier. When skin is properly hydrated, it takes on a brighter and more radiant appearance. Immediately after applying glycerin, your skin will have this appearance. Over time as the glycerin provides its benefits, your skin will begin to look brighter and more radiant all the time!

As you can see, we love glycerin at Atopalm. Because we cater to dry and sensitive skin types, as well as those with psoriasiseczema, rosacea, and similar conditions, glycerin is a huge help to our clients. When glycerin is used in conjunction with our proprietary MLE formula, even extreme cases of dry, sensitive skin can find relief and beauty with Atopalm.

Psoriasis Types and Treatments

plaque-headerPsoriasis is the most common autoimmune disease in the U.S., with as many as 7.5 million Americans suffering from psoriasis symptoms. It is estimated that 125 million people worldwide have some form of psoriasis, with roughly 10 to 30 percent of those people also suffering from psoriatic arthritis.

While many people consider skin psoriasis to be a strictly cosmetic problem, those who actually suffer from the disease are usually quick to disagree with that viewpoint. Well over half of psoriasis sufferers say that the disease negatively impacts their day-to-day life, as well as their finances. Between medical costs, work loss due to the disease, and “comfort costs” like psoriasis skin care and proper clothing, psoriasis can be a heavy financial burden.

Most forms of psoriasis appear between the ages of 15 and 25, though it can develop at any age. Psoriasis can develop randomly, or be passed down by family members. If a child has one parent with psoriasis, that child has roughly a 10% chance of developing the disease. If both parents have psoriasis, the likelihood of the child developing psoriasis jumps to a whopping 50%.

Here’s a look at the different types of psoriasis and how treatment of each type may differ. Please note that our advice and opinions are in no way intended to act as or replace the professional opinion of your doctor or dermatologist. If you suffer from psoriasis, or suspect that you’re developing psoriasis, please seek the medical guidance of your doctor.

Plaque Psoriasis, also known as psoriasis vulgaris, is the most common form of the disease. It appears on the skin as raised, red patches with a silver or white buildup of dead skin cells. (These silver-white patches are often referred to as psoriasis scales.) Plaque psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body, but is usually found on the scalp, knees, elbows, or lower back. Psoriasis vulgaris patches are usually itchy, painful, and extremely dry; it is also common for them to crack and bleed.

Guttate psoriasis (pronounced GUH-tate) is the second most common form of psoriasis. It usually occurs during childhood, and generally affects the trunk and limbs only; though the scalp, face, and ears are also susceptible to developing lesions. With guttate psoriasis, the lesions are small, red, and not as thick as those seen with plaque psoriasis. The lesions typically develop in the hundreds, giving skin and odd, leopard-like appearance.

Guttate psoriasis can occur suddenly and spontaneously, or can be triggered by upper respiratory infections, tonsillitis, stress, skin injury, streptococcal infection, or certain prescription drugs. Streptococcal infection of the throat (known to most people as strep throat) is a very common guttate psoriasis trigger.

Inverse psoriasis, also known as intertriginous psoriasis, is a type of psoriasis that usually accompanies another form of psoriasis, such as plaque or guttate. It appears as large, smooth, and shiny red lesions found within folds of the body, such as behind the knees or under arms. Patches of inverse psoriasis are very prone to irritation, mainly because body skin folds tend to rub and sweat more than other areas of the body. Inverse psoriasis can be experienced by anyone, but is more common in overweight people and those with deep skin folds.

Pustular psoriasis is characterized by a harsh cycle of reddened skin followed by white pustules of noninfectious pus and skin scaling. It is not an infection, and it is not contagious; rather, pustular psoriasis is usually triggered by external factors. Common triggers include medications, topical products, overexposure to UV light, pregnancy, systemic steroids, infection (though pustular psoriasis is not itself an infection), and stress. Withdrawal from systemic medications and topical steroids can also cause pustular psoriasis.

Finally, erythrodermic psoriasis is a very inflammatory form of the disease that usually affects the entire body at once. It is a very rare form of psoriasis, and is usually only seen in those who have an unstable case of plaque psoriasis. Erythrodermic psoriasis is very itchy and painful. Signs to look for include severe redness, exfoliation of dead skin cells in large “sheets” peeling away from the body, skin with a burned appearance, increased heart rate, unstable body temperature, and severe itching and pain.

Important: if you are experiencing erythrodermic psoriasis symptoms, call your doctor immediatelyErythrodermic psoriasis can be life-threatening. This form of psoriasis completely throws off your body’s chemistry, causing protein loss, fluid loss and more. Extreme swelling, infection, pneumonia, and congestive heart failure are all possible complications of erythrodermic psoriasis.

The true cause of erythrodermic psoriasis is not known; however, some known triggers include severe sunburn, infection, stress, alcoholism, systemic treatment withdrawal, allergic rash caused by drugs, and the use of systemic steroids.

Each form of psoriasis has its own set of recommended treatments. You’ll need to speak with your doctor to figure out which form of treatment is right for you. For now, here’s a look at the most common ways doctors treat psoriasis.

  • Systemic medications are prescription drugs that are usually prescribed for moderate to severe psoriasis. They work  throughout the body to fight psoriasis.
  • Phototherapy or light therapy uses UV light to combat psoriasis. Some people choose to spend a little more time in the sun; however, true phototherapy is done in-office under a doctor’s supervision.
  • Biologic drugs or biologics are injections or IV treatments that are given to those with moderate to severe psoriasis that isn’t responding to other treatments.
  • Alternative medicine and homeopathy is a somewhat controversial route that many take to treat psoriasis and other diseases. These forms of medicine are not considered to be as effective as conventional or Western medicine, and may even prolong or worsen one’s psoriasis.
  • Topical psoriasis treatment, including psoriasis skin care, is typically the first course of action against most forms of psoriasis. Topical treatments are easy to acquire either by prescription or over-the-counter, and can go a long way toward soothing and healing psoriasis lesions.

Atopalm’s sister brand Psoriapalm offers a clinically-proven topical psoriasis treatment that includes Atopalm’s revolutionary MLE Technology. Psoriapalm non-greasy psoriasis lotion was proven to be an effective way to reduce visible scaling, plaque elevation, and skin redness. These three actions resulted in skin that was more beautiful, more comfortable, and less likely to worsen over time.

You can learn more about Psoriapalm lotion on the official Psoriapalm website, or by following Psoriapalm on Facebook to stay up-to-date on psoriasis tips, information, sales, and product giveaways.

Think of the aisles in your local big box or drug store where you’re able to buy medicated topical products without a prescription — that’s what our over-the-counter section is! However, unlike your big box or drug store, your purchase of OTC products from Atopalm.com is discreet and highly affordable.

While our over-the-counter section may seem limited, it actually features products designed to treat the most common skin and body concerns that are able to be treated topically. Here’s a look at our OTC options:

  • Psoriapalm, a targeted psoriasis treatment for relieving psoriasis symptoms and restoring health and beauty to the skin
  • Anti-fungal creams, each with a unique active ingredient, for fast relief from the burning, itching, cracking, and scaling caused by all major types of Athlete’s foot, jock itch, and ringworm fungi
